Tribes
Tribes are groups of Uratha who have chosen to follow the teachings of one of the Firstborn totems, five powerful wolf spirits who were among the original children of Father Wolf. These Firstborn spirit children are not descended from Mother Luna. Each promotes a certain attitude to or agenda behind the hunt. The five tribes or Forsaken, with First Tongue names in parentheses, are:
The Five Tribes of the Moon
- Blood Talons (Suthar Anzuth) - the tribe of Fenris Wolf, who promotes the warrior and wolf aspects of the Uratha Their tribal ban is "Offer no surrender that you would not accept".
- Bone Shadows (Hirfathra Hissu) - occultists who seek to restore relations with the Spirit Courts with the guidance of their patron, Death Wolf. Their tribal ban is "Pay each spirit in kind".
- Hunters in Darkness (Meninna) - protectors of loci, the spiritual centres of the world. Black Wolf is their totem. Their tribal ban is "Let no sacred space in your territory be violated".
- Iron Masters (Farsil Luhal) - this tribe, following the teachings of Red Wolf, embrace change and new ideas. They are closer to humanity, keeping up with technology and taking cities for their territory. Their tribal ban is "Honor your territory in all things".
- Storm Lords (Iminir) - the tribe of Winter Wolf seeks to lead all Uratha through strength and noble example. Their tribal ban is "Allow no one to witness or to tend your weakness".
The Tribeless
- Ghost Wolves (Thihirtha Numea) - not an actual tribe, rather a collective term for Uratha who eschew the tribes while not necessarily abandoning the Oath of the Moon. As they are not a tribe, they have no patron spirit or tribal ban.
The Pure
Three tribes stand in opposition to those who swear their oaths to Luna, and against those who they see as the murderers of Father Wolf. These three tribes are collectively called The Pure
- Fire-Touched (Izidakh) - The followers of Rabid Wolf, these are the spiritual leaders of The Pure and believe that the Forsaken are "damned by default." Rabid Wolf's ban is that he may not let a false statement lie. The Izidakh must challenge lies the moment they are uttered, even if doing so forces them to lose face in front of other werewolves.
- Ivory Claws (Tzuumfin) - Silver Wolf, the totem of the Ivory Claws, is obsessed with purity, and will not accept a werewolf who has served "Luna's weaklings." Power passes by birth and heritage rather than merit as with Forsaken.
- Predator Kings (Ninna Farakh)) - The Predator Kings are primitive monsters who follow Dire Wolf, the oldest of the Firstborn. The Predator Kings do not hate the Forsaken for the slaying of Father Wolf, but for the loss of Pangea, the Hunter's Paradise. Dire Wolf's ban is that he may not choose to touch anything made by the hands of humans except to destroy it. Dire Wolf's children suffer a less stringent ban, but still tend to wear only clothes they have made themselves.
Lodges
In addition to Tribes, there are Lodges that Uratha may join. Each have their own requirements for membership.
