Auspex

From OSWIKI

Jump to: navigation, search
Although Auspex is a potent Discipline, especially at high levels of mastery, a given Kindred’s execution of it is not always flawless. Other supernatural powers and abilities can cloud or contest the power of Auspex, the most common of these being Obfuscate — the direct opposite of Auspex, in many ways.

The heart of any Auspex-versus-Obfuscate contest is a clash of mighty wills, for both powers stem from and rely upon the power of the Kindred mind. When a character with Auspex uses his acute senses to see through another’s Obfuscate, make a contested roll of Wits + Investigation + Auspex versus Resolve + Stealth + Obfuscate. Whoever accumulates the most successes wins the battle of wills. Ties go to the defender. Most of the time, ties result in the Obfuscated character remaining hidden (as the Auspex-user is the initiator), but not always. In the event that a vampire uses Obfuscate right in front of a Kindred with Auspex, the hiding character is the challenger, as it is he who tries to hide in plain sight.

Obfuscate is not the only supernatural ability with the potential to foil the clarity of Auspex. For example, a character using the Twilight Projection power might be seen by a character using the Heightened Senses power. The general rule of thumb is to apply the same system, but in regard to whatever mechanic is used: Wits + Investigation + Auspex is still rolled for the perceiving character, and Resolve + an appropriate Skill + the Discipline in question is rolled for the defender. </onlyinclude>

Crossover Rules

As it is not exactly covered, these are the current rules for stealth/detection powers in a crossover environment. Users of Auspex get the above-stated rule against other supernatural powers of stealth automatically, and it is contested against their power's activation roll. If for some reason the power does not have an activation roll or is Automatic or Always On, then that supernatural rolls Resolve + Stealth + Rating of the power.

Obfuscate works similarly. When another supernatural has a power of detection, compare the activation roll successes against the Kindred's roll of Resolve + Stealth + Obfuscate.

A note for Mages: Automatic powers of stealth that are Always On (such as Obfuscate 2) do not set off a mage's unseen sense ability. However, something else might, and then their roll to activate their Mage Sight spell would be contested against the above roll for the Obfuscate user.

Errata

Auspex • • : V:tR pg 120: Replace the second sentence of the first paragraph at the top of the right column with the following (the phrase “+ Blood Potency” is added) Intelligence + Empathy + Auspex is rolled versus the subject’s Composure + Blood Potency in a contested action.

Rules Update for Aura Perception

This is to update the rules on Aura Perception, as they have changed across game lines and we'd like to keep them all basically equal. The emotional components are all the same, but the effects on the Nature of the subject have changed. To determine the Nature is the same as what the rules say for shade; that is, there is no dice penalty to only get this information, but one does not also get color without taking a penalty. The following is basically the rules from Mage: the Awakening.

Type Aura
Mortal (includes psychics) "Normal" aura
Magic User (includes Awakened and Thaumaturges) Myriad sparkles in aura
Sleeper Weak, muted aura
Sleepwalker Muted aura with faint glimmers within
Lacking a soul Empty void where the aura should be
Under a Fate geas Dark bands criss-crossing aura
Vampire Aura colors are pale
Shapeshifter Intensely vibrant aura
Ghost Splotchy, intermittent aura
Lich Black veins in aura

Shifters

When in Hishu (the human) and Urhan (the wolf) forms, they are designed for stealth. All supernatural attempts to find out what they truly are suffer a -2 penalty. This applies to Aura Perception, and is a penalty on any use, since even basic shade (which normally has no modifier) will give you information if the target is human, vampire, or werewolf (normal, pale, bright).

Ghouls

If someone uses Aura Perception and only looks for shade, on a ghoul they will get normal mortal but weak and muted, meaning either Dominate is in effect, or some other power of control. If they look for the primary color (-1) they get the primary color as normal. If they look for color patterns (-2) then they'll get the emotional patterns as normal, but also deep red (desirous/lustful) and/or bright green (obsessed) depending on the mood of the ghoul at the time. Note that you don't know what they're desirous, lustful, or obsessed about, just that they are. In addition or by itself, they can look at the weak aura to look for the signs of pale veins, which is a -2 penalty. So someone who just wants to look at an aura and look for the veins is -2, someone who wants to see color patterns and see if the veins are there as well is -4.

Only if the veins are looked for specifically can the user be sure the target is a ghoul simply by Aura Perception.
