Character Background
Arkady Vadim Fyodor was born in St. Petersburg (then Leningrad), Russia, in the middle of December 1959. His family was well-off, having survived the revolution due to political connections even though they had family ties to the Tzar and the ruling class, and surviving Communism by profiting off the Cold War itself. Arkady was shielded from the "family business" by his father, who wanted his firstborn son to be a proper noble, as was his birthright. Arkady was raised with the beliefs of protecting the people, and of caring for one's family above all. He incorporated those ideas with the prevalent notions of Communism as well as noblesse oblige. The were other family secrets that Arkady was allowed to know, though: they were a strong bloodline of Wolf-Blooded, related to the Uratha. It was hoped by his father that Arkady would one day change and become one of The People as well, and bring honor to the family.
Arkady was never a good student, but he did his best and learned what he could. It was not a lack of intelligence, but a lack of desire. He preferred being outside and doing physical activities and sports. He was always a very physical child, and was starting to become good in some of the sports he participated in. Only his father's desire for Arkady to be raised as royalty, or as close to it as was possible in Cold War Russia, kept Arkady from being put into the Olympic athlete track.
Arkady dealt with his cousins who were Uratha, getting closer than most dared. He started to have the desire to run with the pack, but was always held back because he was "just a Wolf Blood, little cousin". He continued working with them as much as possible, though, and became the main contact for the Uratha and his branch of the Fyodor family.
When Arkady was almost 15, he was caught camping outside the city in a heavy storm in the beginning of winter. It was an unpredicted storm, and seemed harsher than was normal for the time of year. Arkady found himself staring at the moon and praying to Luna for assistance. This was not something he had ever done before, but a few hours later his cousins found him, as they were out hunting as wolves. They helped him find food and water, but did not lead him home, nor did they return to human form to communicate with him. After helping him in such ways, they left him to nature.
Arkady survived his time in the woods, as the snow all but melted the next day, but he found the following month the most terrifying of his life. He began having nightmares about spirits becoming flesh and coming after him and his family, attacking them, and he was unable to stop them. He started finding the local dogs following him, while the other animals fled his approach. Some of the people shied away, while some began trying to pick fights with him. He had no idea what was going on, but he started to sense a certain spirit continually while he was out. He didn't know what kind of spirit, only that it was around. One night he was out walking under the moon, time shifting and the world warping and he found himself near a bad neighborhood and his body suddenly started breaking. He shifted through the various forms for a while, before a gang from the neighborhood found him, writhing on the ground, bathed in moonlight. They started prodding him, then when he shifted into Urshal form, they fell back, hissing and screeching, as they were not fully human. They started to pick up makeshift weapons as Arkady finally fell to Death Rage and howled to the moon and fell on them.
He awoke the next day, coated in dried blood, naked and huddled in the yard of his family's estate. His cousins were there as well, and they were waiting for him to wake up. They greeted him differently: he was a brother-in-arms now. He finally ran with them as one of the pack. He ran with them and they trained him and worked with him for a year before they offered him entrance into their Tribe: The Storm Lords.
His tribal induction was to weather a winter night on his own. He was told then that the year before, the storm he was lost in was one of his cousin's inductions into the Tribe. Arkady went out into the woods, with literally nothing. He shifted into Urhan form and managed to survive the night, even with elder Storm Lords increasing the intensity of the weather as the night wore on.
Arkady spent the next few years running with his pack. He slowly grew as an Uratha, dealing with spirits and defending his family. He rose in Purity and Honor, becoming known as an honest man who seemed unable to tell a lie even if he wanted to.
In the late 70s, his pack started roaming further from their ancestral lands. They slowly moved further east, increasingly taking over more and more territory. Eventually they took over more than they could handle, and a rival pack started encroaching on the areas they had just taken over. The pack then became focused on keeping their new territory, to the point of neglecting their core territory. One of Arkady's nieces, Anya, became possessed by a spirit of fear. The spirit used her as a hidden route to return to Japan. Arkady's pack could not entirely leave to follow her and try to save her, so they split. Arkady, his brother Pyotr (Anya's father), and his cousin Yuri, left to follow Anya to Japan. Pyotr was an Irraka Storm Lord and Yuri was an Ithaeur Storm Lord. It took them a year to find her, as the spirit was trying its best to stay hidden. They had tracked her to Tokyo, and once they found and confronted her and it, Yuri performed the Banish Spirit rite upon it to force it out of Anya. She was weakened by her experience, and the pack returned with her to Russia.
Except Arkady.
During their time in Tokyo, he had met someone. She was Miyuki Saito. He fell in love with her on sight, and he made every effort to be with her. Her father didn't fully approve of Arkady because he was Russian, instead of Japanese. But Arkady's devotion to Miyuki won her father over in time. After freeing Anya, he declared his intentions to stay with her and marry her, to his pack and her father. After a few months, they were married in the Saito home: Castle Himeji. In their first few years of marriage, they had four children: Alexei, a son in 1981; Riko, a daughter in 1982; Sakae, a daughter in 1984; and Sen, a daughter in 1985. Miyuki's father died of heart failure in the winter of 1986, leaving the home to Arkady and Miyuki. Arkady became the head of the household, with family and staff living there and working there. Some of Arkady's family had moved to Japan to be closer to him, as well, living at the castle with the rest of his family.
Arkady began watching over the castle and those inside as his territory, and slowly expanded outside the castle walls. He had a few skirmishes with a neighboring pack, but only over boundaries: they didn't care for his territory because there wasn't a serious locus there, and they understood Arkady was protecting his family, and they respected him for that. He continued his weekly patrols of the area, and daily inside the castle. Spirits were sometimes more attracted to the area because the concentration of Wolf-Blooded made it easier for them to affect the material world. Arkady fought them off when necessary, and did his best at dealing with them otherwise.
Arkady eventually met Sakura Takeda, and learned about vampires in Tokyo. Sakura informed him that they were distantly related. They began a working relationship, with Arkady doing his best to make sure his family was safe and protected from the night predators by using their own rules and laws to his advantage. Some of her more direct descendants came to live in the castle around this time as well.
in 1992, Nadia was born. Mischa followed two years later. And then Scarlet Fever struck. It began slowly in 1996, with a few members of the family falling ill. Most were treated with antibiotics as normal. But the fever continued to spread, and eventually the antibiotics were not enough. Arkady began to suspect spiritual influence, but was never able to find anything concrete. The family members were moved to isolate them to keep the infection from spreading and killing everyone, and taken to one of the towers of the castle. Arkady's wife and daughter Nadia soon became ill. Arkady did everything in his powers to try and save his wife, but nothing worked. Her last day came quickly, and Arkady resigned himself to asking Sakura for assistance, but his wife died before nightfall. Nadia recovered from the illness, but changed after the loss of her mother.
Arkady fell to depression for years after her death, simply moving through the days and nights mechanically. His son moved to America to attend UCLA in 1999. His oldest daughter, Riko, met a man while she was in Russia and married him. Sakae and Sen both left for University in London when they were old enough. Nadia slowly became a teenager, rebelling against everything. Mischa had her dancing.
